Time-Series Data
A sequence of data points collected or recorded at successive, typically uniform, time intervals, used for temporal analysis, forecasting, and detecting patterns that evolve over time.
Time-series data is generated by any system that produces measurements over time: server metrics, stock prices, user engagement counts, temperature readings, and sales figures. The temporal ordering is the defining characteristic, as the sequence and timing of observations carry meaning that is lost if records are shuffled.
Time-series analysis involves specialized techniques: trend decomposition (separating long-term direction from seasonal patterns and noise), stationarity testing (determining if statistical properties change over time), autocorrelation analysis (measuring how current values relate to past values), and forecasting (predicting future values from historical patterns).
For growth teams, time-series data powers forecasting models (revenue projections, traffic predictions), anomaly detection (identifying unusual metric spikes or drops), and seasonal analysis (understanding weekly, monthly, or yearly patterns in user behavior). Specialized time-series databases like InfluxDB, TimescaleDB, and Amazon Timestream are optimized for the high write volumes and temporal queries that time-series workloads demand.
